Rebecca Miller Campbell describes herself as a transplant to Morgan County. Having grown up in Wolfe and Lee counties in Eastern Ky, she moved to Morgan County in 2005. She currently resides in West Liberty with her husband, Dave.
Rebecca is a primarily self-taught folk artist. She grew up in a home where creativity was always encouraged and ‘projects’ were seldom questioned as it seemed everyone in the household always had a project they were working on. Like many artists, she has been making things for as long as she can remember. She made her first doll, a very traditional, primitive rag doll around 2000. Over the years Rebecca’s work has grown and evolved. Her cloth sculptures are now very recognizable as her own and feature Rebecca’s signature “needle-sculpted pout”.
Fabric, paperclay and paint are her favorite mediums. Many of her dolls are made entirely from cloth that has been painted and sanded in multiple layers. Every doll Rebecca makes is of her own design. She uses no patterns other than her own drawn pattern pieces to construct cloth dolls. Her paperclay sculptures are hand-sculpted without the use of any molds. Each one of a kind piece will become a family heirloom and is a result of hours of stuffing, needle-sculpting, stitching, painting, needle-felting, sanding, aging and sculpting.
Rebecca is a member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and exhibits her work at several arts and crafts fairs in Kentucky including the Berea Craft Festival, A Day in the Country, the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen Fall Fair, AFB Woodland Art Fair and the annual Sorghum Festival in West Liberty, Ky. To date her work has been published in three national publications. Her work is scheduled to appear in two publications in early 2015, including Art Doll Quarterly.
